Sharing digital photos with your friends or family can be kind
of a pain. You can send an email attachment, but there are limits
on the size of email attachments. You can upload pictures to the
web, but you have to have web space and know what you’re
doing. Then you have to somehow get people to look at them. The
solution to this problem? Hello.
No, that’s not a friendly greeting. It’s a free program
that makes it as easy as pie to share pictures. Hello was designed
by the same people that made Picasa, and they elegantly work together
(although you don’t need Picasa to use Hello). Hello is
basically a chat program that allows you to share pictures. It
automatically adjusts your pictures as you send them so that they
are quick to transfer and still look good. Then you can type and
tell your friend about the picture.
Here’s how it works. Just download Hello here.
It’s less than 1.5MB so it shouldn’t take more than
a couple minutes. Before you download, it asks you to create a
username and password that you use to login each time you start
Hello. The interface is simple – when you start your "buddy
list" is shown on the left. You can invite your friends or
family to join you by clicking the Invite button.
This sends them an email invitation telling them about Hello and
how to download it if they haven’t done so already. When
you double-click one of your "friends" in the buddy
list, it starts a session. You can then begin chatting and sending
pictures.
Just click Send Pictures to start sharing pictures.
You can select whether to use Picasa or Windows Explorer to choose
pictures to share. In Picasa, just add any pictures you want to
share to the picture tray and click Send Hello. Otherwise, just
select your pictures using Windows Explorer. Any pictures you
select are added to the timeline at the bottom of the Hello screen.
Just click on one of the pictures and it is automatically sent
to your chat partner. Then use the chat window to tell your friend
about the picture. It’s really that simple and easy.
In my informal tests, Hello worked perfectly. Pictures were transferred
quickly and their quality was more than adequate. The interface,
just like Picasa, is intuitive and well-designed. The only problem
I had was with the Follow Friend button. This
controls whether the picture on your screen is controlled by your
chat partner or by you. It seemed backward to me, but I’ve
been known to do a lot of things backwardly so it might just be
me. You’ll probably have no trouble figuring it out. Also,
by default all the pictures I received were being saved to my
computer. If you don’t want this to happen, just go to Tools
> Options and uncheck the box.
By the way, the Geeky Jockette figured out how to make little
hearts fall down the screen. Any time you type the word “love”,
a heart falls down the screen. There are other little figures
that fall down the screen including smiley faces. Find out more
about it here.
Just like Picasa makes organizing your digital photos idiot-proof,
Hello makes sharing your pictures idiot-proof. Both programs were
obviously designed with the user in mind. It is really amazing
that software this good is completely free. Hello is the easiest
way to share your pictures with friends or family. It’s
easy, it works, and it’s free. That’s why it has been
officially certified by GeekyJock.com.
Wanna share some of your cool pictures with me? My Hello username
is cclamz.
