I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that Windows
allows programs to run on startup, or that there are so many programs
that add themselves to the startup list without asking you during installation.
I absolutely hate it when programs I install either think they know what
I want, or do things without asking me first. For example, I downloaded
and installed Apple iTunes for Windows to see what all the hype was about.
Without me knowing, iTunes took all the MP3s on my computer and rearranged
them into folders based on artist. All my time organizing my music how
I wanted it was a total waste. Man that irks me! There are some decent
software vendors out there that ask you before wreaking havoc, but not
many. But I digress…
What’s wrong with programs automatically starting
when you turn your computer on? Windows may startup very slowly because
each program that is represented by an icon in the system tray (next to
the clock) is actually loaded into memory. After startup, these programs
run in the background. When you have a lot of these programs running in
the background, it can be a huge drain on your computer's resources, especially
on slower machines. You can always right click on an icon and choose exit,
but they usually come back the next time you start your computer
Luckily, it’s not terribly hard to prevent programs
from running automatically when your computer starts up. In true Microsoft
fashion, it’s just not very intuitive or simple. Here’s what
you have to do:
- To find out which programs are starting, click on Start
> Run… In the Run dialog
box type “msconfig”
(without the quotes) and hit Enter.
