Something that has always annoyed me is when I click on a link to a Word (.doc) file on the web, it opens right within Internet Explorer. Yes, I know, when it comes to things like this I am very easily annoyed. But really, why would I want a Word document to open in the smaller space of an IE window, with none (or few) of the menus or toolbars you'd see if you were using Word?
I thought for sure there would be setting in IE that would tell the browser to open Word files in Word, but alas, the setting was not there. So it was off to Google to see if someone had found a fix for this. I found the answer from a site run by a woman named Shauna Kelly. She wrote a great tutorial on how to make Word (or any file) open in the program you want it to, not in IE:

Illogically, you have to change a setting from within Windows Explorer (or My Computer), not Internet Explorer. This has a lot to do with Microsoft's idiotic idea a long time ago to integrate the Internet Explorer browser into almost every part of the Windows operating system. Not only does integrating the browser into the operating system make for confusing situations such as the subject of this post, but it has made keeping Windows secure a frustrating experience for hundreds of millions Windows users.
